Bhutan is spiritually blessed by many Buddhist Abbots both from India and Tibet and it is a sacred land with deeply spiritual people. There are more than 10,000 stupas or chortens and more than 2500 monasteries in the nation, built many centuries ago in honour of the teachings of Buddhism and on the glory of the rulers as well as on the greatness of many visiting Abbots of the past. Some are national treasures and wonders like the Taktsang,( the Tiger’s Nest) built on a steep rugged cliff which highlights the deep faith of the people of Bhutan. On the other hand, the hermitages that are built high above some of these sacred sites are a genius to see; many of them are huts in traditional architecture providing shelter to meditating monks amidst deep nature in the wilderness.

Mystical and spiritual seekers will find numerous spiritual sites throughout the dragon country or Drukyul. Some of these places are within easy reach having a few hours walk but others require a bit of a trek or climb. However, it is always satisfying to reach the tops of the numerous monasteries and lhakhangs which mark Bhutan`s unique religious identity and to take a moment to contemplate for peace of mind drawing happiness out of it. The seasonal festivals such as Tshechus , local community festivals and the sacred architecture represented by the various stupas and walls of the monuments are a constant reminder for any visitors that spirituality and the numinous life is still a way of living in Bhutan despite a fast changing world of information Technology.
